MENTAL HEALTH
Mental Health Matters in Missouri:
A Snapshot of Diagnosis and Spending from Commercial Claims
One-fourth of Missouri adults experienced a mental illness during 2022. One-fifth of Missouri adolescents and one-tenth of adults had a major depressive episode, as estimated by a 2024 report from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health [1].These statistics show the alarming state of mental health in Missouri.
The Missouri Health Value Collaborative (MHVC) used analytics from its commercial claims data warehouse to start a conversation with employers and other stakeholders about mental health. The resulting infographic presents key mental health insights and trends in Missouri for commercially-insured people 0-64 years old, with a focus on diagnosis, spending, outpatient care, and local community resources. This project was made possible by MHVC’s community partners, including MHVC Champions & Friends for Health Care Value, MHVC data contributors, Freedman HealthCare, NAMI, and MBHC.
MHVC seeks to drive informed, productive conversations and inspire the implementation of innovative solutions for workplace mental health and mental health in general.
